GES Reopening: First-Year Students Start School on December 4th 2023

Amidst calls from Parliament to reconsider the reporting date for first-year students, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has maintained that the reopening date remains December 4th, 2023, as initially indicated on the Placement form.

The call from Parliament suggested a rescheduling of the reopening date to the first week of January 2024. The rationale behind this proposal was to afford students, parents, teaching and non-teaching staff more time for preparation, considering the short notice and the potential inconvenience caused.

However, in a statement dated Saturday, December 2, the GES affirmed its stance, stating, “It is the expectation of management that schools begin registration and orientation of students from the 4th of December 2023.” The GES emphasized adherence to the original reporting date, despite the parliamentary suggestion.

According to the academic calendar provided by the GES, there will be a Christmas break starting on the 21st of December 2023. Academic activities are set to resume on the 3rd of January 2024, continuing until March 5th, 2024.

The GES also urged students who are yet to complete their Self-placement to do so promptly, ensuring a smooth start to the academic calendar. Expressing gratitude to all stakeholders for their collaboration and support throughout the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) process, the GES appealed for continued patience to ensure the implementation of the Senior High School (SHS) academic calendar without disruptions, returning to the pre-COVID schedule.

As the debate around the reopening date unfolds, the GES remains steadfast in its commitment to commence the academic year on December 4th, 2023, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the set timelines for the benefit of all involved parties.
