WAEC Releases 2024 BECE Social Studies Sample Questions (P1 & P2)

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released sample questions to help students prepare for the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) Social Studies exams.

The Social Studies exam will consist of two papers: Paper 1 (Objective) and Paper 2 (Essay).

Paper 1 (Objective)

This paper will consist of 40 objective questions to be completed in 45 minutes for a total score of 40 marks. Here are some sample questions to get you started:

  • What is the component of a map that helps identify the distribution of features (Legend, Scale, Conventional Signs, Cardinal Points)?
  • Socialization is important because it fosters social cohesion (not rural-urban migration, respect for the rich, or popularity).
  • Aggressive behavior in adolescents is an emotional characteristic (not social, physical, or cognitive).
  • The cornerstone of a democracy is rule by the people (not the prime minister, legislature, or president).

Paper 2 (Essay)

This is a 1-hour essay-type paper with three sections: I, II, and III. There will be one compulsory question in Section I and two questions each in Sections II and III. Students must answer one question from each of Sections II and III.

Sample Essay Questions

Section I: Ghana

  • What are the causes of food shortage despite fertile land?
  • How can science and technology be used as solutions?

Section II: Socialization

  • What is the difference between agents and agencies of socialization?
  • Name 3 institutions that teach you community values.

Section III: Development and Social Issues

  • How can you contribute to your community?
  • What are 3 factors to consider in community decision-making?
  • What is marriage as a social institution?
  • What are 5 reasons marriages break down in your community?

Tips for Preparing for the BECE Social Studies Exam

  • Review these sample questions and past exams.
  • Take practice tests under timed conditions.
  • Form a study group to discuss concepts and answer questions.
  • Make sure you understand the key terms and concepts covered in the syllabus.
  • Pay attention in class and take good notes.
