Commemorating Founders’ Day: Public Holiday Declared for Monday, August 5, 2024

The Ministry of the Interior has announced that Monday, August 5, 2024, will be a public holiday to honor Founders’ Day, which officially falls on Sunday, August 4. This decision ensures the holiday is observed throughout Ghana, offering a day of reflection and remembrance for the nation’s history.

Founders’ Day celebrates the contributions of various generations of Ghanaians in their struggle for independence from colonial rule. The day was instituted by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who, in 2018, amended the Public Holiday Act to establish August 4 as Founders’ Day. This amendment also resulted in the introduction of two new holidays and the removal of three existing ones. Notably, the day previously recognized as Founders’ Day on September 21 was rebranded to honor Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, marking his birthday as a separate memorial day.

This holiday adjustment is made possible through an Executive Instrument (E.I) issued by the President, under Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601). Consequently, while the statutory holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is recognized as an additional public holiday, allowing citizens to fully engage in the commemoration.
