The trailer for “Grand Theft Auto VI,” the highly anticipated and notoriously violent next installment in the game franchise, was released online ahead of schedule after a leak. According to developer Rockstar Games, the sixth chapter is set to launch in 2025.

Despite the premature release, the trailer quickly gained massive popularity, surpassing 32 million views on YouTube within its first few hours.

Originally slated for a Tuesday, December 5 release at 9 am PST, Rockstar Games addressed the situation on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Our trailer has leaked so please watch the real thing on YouTube.”

The gaming community has eagerly awaited GTA 6, as the previous installment, GTA 5, was released in 2013. The trailer introduces a female protagonist named Lucia, engaging in a crime spree across crowded beaches, city highways, and clubs alongside her partner, resembling a Bonnie-and-Clyde scenario.

Rockstar Games, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive,

has faced challenges with leaks before. In 2022, hackers leaked unreleased footage from the upcoming GTA iteration, causing a stir in the gaming community. The company confirmed the legitimacy of the leaked screenshots and gameplay videos, attributing the incident to a “network intrusion.”

In an official statement on what was then Twitter, Rockstar Games announced, “We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto.”
