2024 WASSCE Grading System

Understanding the 2024 WASSCE Grading System and How It Impacts Student Results

The 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) grading system has been disclosed, providing key insights for students on how their performance will be assessed. As a standardized test, the WASSCE results play a crucial role in determining eligibility for tertiary education and are vital for certification. Here’s a breakdown of how the grading works and what students should expect.

Overview of the 2024 WASSCE Grading Structure

The WASSCE grading system evaluates students based on both their continuous assessment (30%) and their final examination (70%). Each subject’s final grade is determined by the student’s overall performance, combining these two elements.

Students receive one of nine grades ranging from A1 to F9, with A1 representing “Excellent” and F9 indicating failure. Scoring high marks on the final WASSCE examination is essential, as most students who fail tend to struggle with their exam performance rather than their continuous assessment.

Grading Breakdown: Scores and Descriptions

Here’s a simplified look at the grades and their respective percentage ranges:

  • A1 (Excellent): 75% – 100%
  • B2 (Very Good): 70% – 74%
  • B3 (Good): 65% – 69%
  • C4 (Credit): 60% – 64%
  • C5 (Credit): 55% – 59%
  • C6 (Credit): 50% – 54%
  • D7 (Pass): 45% – 49%
  • E8 (Pass): 40% – 44%
  • F9 (Fail): 0% – 39%

Each grade carries a corresponding numeric value, which is often used to calculate cumulative scores for university admissions.

How to Calculate Your WASSCE Score

To calculate your overall WASSCE score, you’ll need to sum the results of your six best subjects, which must include core subjects like Mathematics and English Language. If you’re planning to pursue a science-based program at university, your Integrated Science grade will also be critical. For non-science programs, Social Studies can be substituted for Science.

Key Dates for the 2024 WASSCE

The upcoming WASSCE examinations are scheduled to take place from August 5, 2024, to September 20, 2024. As students prepare, it’s important to stay informed about the examination timetable and subject requirements. The exams cover a wide array of subjects, from core courses like English Language and Mathematics to elective subjects such as Business Management and Physics.
