Dr. Rashid Draman, the Executive Director for the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA) has blamed Parliamentary candidates. He said electorates make unrealistic demands which are contrary to their role.
In the just ended General Elections, about thirty Members of Parliament lost their seats and will not return to Parliamentary.
According to Citi News, many electorates voted their MPs out because of poor roads. Other also voted out their member of parliaments because of inadequate developmental projects in their areas.
The above-mentioned roles are not the main concerns of law makers. Dr. Draman said voter education must be improved in view of these developments. He mention this when speeking on Citi Breakfast Show.
Dr. Draman said member of parliaments mount campaign platforms and make all sort of promises. He said if we have well informed citizenry, then people will be able to understand what MPs can do and what cannot do. Dr. added this will help inform the voting choices of electorates.
He has called for electorates to vote for local government officials who are capable to ensure development at the local level. Dr. Draman reiterated that this trend needs to be reversed.
Dr. Draman added that the way forward is to have chief executives who are not elected by the people. But chief executives who control a lot more resources than the member of parliament.
In 2004, Dr Draman set up the Parliamentary Centre’s Africa Office in Accra. He revived the African Parliamentarians’ Network Against Corruption.
He holds a PHD in Political Science from Carleton University, Ottawa. Dr Rashid has taught courses on Development and Conflict at that University. He has been a guest lecturer at Harvard University.
