Abraham Amaliba, a private legal practitioner is of the view that Ghana’s Democracy is under threat. This comes after series of violence that have occurred after the 2020 general election.
He shared his view on the post-election violence in 2020 when speaking with Sefa Danquah. On ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ show Mr Amaliba said this year’s post-election is the worst as compared to other elections the country has had.
He said “Our democracy is at stake. We have seen in previous times that post elections there is no violence. Usually, it is just the counting of votes and declaration of results. This is the first time we are seeing it. What we normally see is election violence or before election violence but for post-election violence, this is the new one we are seeing now. We have now seen people who were killed after elections and these are the handiwork of the police and military and that is a damning report for Akufo-Addo’s Government”.
According to the Police, at least five (5) people have died in 2020 post-election violence. It must be documented that there have been more than sixty (60) incidents of election related violence.
Civil Society Organizations like OneGhana Movement has called for the arrest of people. This follows after reports of election violence. They are calling for the arrest and prosecution of people whose activities have led to the death of five people during and after the election day.
Election Observers on the other hand, have commended Ghana for holding a peaceful election.
