ECG Managing Director Samuel Dubik Mahama Resigns After Two Years in Office

Samuel Dubik Mahama, the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has officially stepped down from his position. His resignation comes after two years of serving as the head of the country’s primary power distribution company.

Mr. Mahama submitted his resignation letter to the ECG board, offering a two-week notice period. According to a source, he cited personal reasons for his decision and expressed gratitude to the board for their support and the opportunities he had while leading the company.

However, there are reports suggesting that his tenure was marked by some internal challenges. Sources indicate that Mahama faced resistance from the board and ECG staff regarding his management approach. These issues may have played a role in his decision to leave.

In May 2024, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia revealed how some individuals within the ECG had obstructed the government’s attempts to digitalize the company’s revenue collection system. The efforts to modernize the ECG’s operations, particularly through digitalization, had reportedly faced sabotage from within.

The ECG has also struggled with its prepaid meter billing system in recent times, with many customers experiencing negative balances on their prepaid accounts. These ongoing technical issues have been a source of frustration for both the company and its customers.

Mahama’s resignation marks a significant leadership change at ECG, a company that continues to grapple with operational challenges amidst growing calls for digital transformation.
